that bonus for enemy rangers if they try to use it against you.
Try to kill enemy monks first if possible, since they ll be your opponents main
source of healing. Also, in the Ascalon Arena, beware of foes who have equipment and
skills that are more powerful than what they should have at this level. Some players make
alternate characters and rush them to zones later in the game, buy the best armor and
high-end skills, and then come back to this arena to beat up on unsuspecting, newer
players. If you run into such a foe (if your allies attacks barely do any damage to him/her,
that s a good clue), remember that your offensive spells will ignore that person s armor.
Beyond those tips, just have fun here and get familiar with the basics of mesmer PvP.
4.2.2. Shiverpeak Arena
This arena has a max level of 15, and therefore is accessible only by role-playing
characters. Talk to the arena guard in Yak s Bend (Prophecies campaign) to reach it. As
- 132 -
in the Ascalon Arena, battles here are fought between two randomly assigned teams of
four; the last team standing wins.
The Shiverpeak Arena also is similar to the one in Ascalon in terms of battlefield
layout. Instead of a lake of tar, this arena features an ice-covered lake. Ice will not
reduce your movement rate as long as you keep moving, but if you stop on it, you ll suffer
a nasty 70% movement rate reduction for 5 seconds. With that in mind, it s not inherently
dangerous to dash across the ice, but beware aeromancers and hammer warriors who will
knock you down, causing you to be snared by the terrain effect.
Even more so than the Ascalon Arena, this arena frequently contains rushed
characters who are wearing Droknar s Forge armor and have some elite skills. You
should fully expect to run into rangers using elites like Poison Arrow here, monks with
many skills from late-game trainers, and warriors who take virtually no damage from
anything (except your armor-ignoring chaos damage, naturally). As a mesmer, you re
likely to be one of their primary targets, so you ll usually benefit from bringing a defensive
stance to this arena. Distortion is good if you ve specialized Illusion Magic heavily, while
Physical Resistance might prove more useful otherwise; just beware enemy elementalists
when using it.
If you do much fighting here, chances are good that you ll notice lots of
enchantments being used. With that in mind, you may not want to spend much time
fighting here until after you ve been to Beacon s Perch and learned Shatter Enchantment.
The damage from the skill is sizable, and the enchantment removal will help you deal with
Healing Breeze, Vigorous Spirit, and other enchantment-based healing. Drain
Enchantment from the trainer at Ice Tooth Cave is a good alternative if you find yourself
running out of energy often.
4.2.3. Random Arenas
The Random Arenas make up the first PvP area that is mainly populated by level
20 characters. Accessed in the role-playing part of the game from the docks of Lion's
Arch in Kryta, this competitive mission will place you in a 4v4 PvP battle using random
teams, much like for the Ascalon or Shiverpeak arenas. To spice things up, though, the
battlefield for each match will be randomly chosen from a list of eight arenas: the ones
used by the Ascalon Arena and the Shiverpeak Arena, plus six oters.
Matches in the Random Arenas fall into one of three categories: annihilation,
obelisk annihilation, and point match. Annihilation matches follow the same rules as the

Ascalon and Shiverpeaks arenas: the two teams fight each other, and the team that
survives is the winner; there s no resurrection besides what team mates provide. Obelisk
Annihilation matches occur in the Heroes Crypt arena. These follow the same rules as
regular annihilation battles, except both teams will have a flag in their starting room that
they can carry to the flag stand in the center of the map in order to make the obelisk
periodically blast nearby members of the opposing team for ~80 damage. Point matches,
which occur in The Crag, are won by scoring more kills than the opposing team within the
