Celibacy NOW 181
Chapter Thirteen
Marshall didn t ring Todd until he was sitting in the driver s seat. The moment
Todd answered, Marshall said, I read your e-mail. On my way to your condo. If you
aren t there, get there. Then he hung up.
The drive to Todd s had Marshall jumpy. He tried to remember whether Todd had
ever mentioned owning a gun. Todd was too white-bread for violence, but that didn t
mean he wouldn t keep something around his house for protection, especially if he was
getting involved in criminal activity.
As Marshall walked to the front door, he looked around every corner and into
every shadow, then laughed at himself for it. Whatever was going to happen would
happen. All Marshall could do was try to stay ahead of the game.
He rang the bell, stuffed his hands in his pockets, and waited.
Todd opened the door and then, appearing as spooked as Marshall felt, looked
past Marshall, up and down the hallway, then pulled Marshall in and shut the door.
Jesus, Marshall. I know you were sore about me screwing up that piece of tail,
but that s one hell of a grudge you re holding! What the fuck? Todd ran his fingers
through his short scruff and then shook his head. Forget about it. Let s just move on.
I ll double your commission, all right?
Todd s foyer wasn t as grand in scale as in some homes Marshall had sold, but in
terms of gilt furniture, rococo mirrors, and conspicuously displayed objets d art, it took
the prize. The crystal chandelier was too large for the two-story foyer and left Marshall
feeling claustrophobic. He moved deeper into the condo to get away from it only to find
that the living room was just as cramped with gaudy furnishings.

Trying to stay cool, Marshall gave Todd a smile. A ight, man. Whatever. Just tell
me somethin . Why you so jumpy? Nearly pulled my arm off haulin me inside.
What? I did? A bead of sweat had started at Todd s temple, but now he was
trying to act casual. Todd spread his arms. Guess the neighborhood isn t what it once
was. Gotta protect my masterpieces. Todd turned around, lips pressed together. But
the right buyer could get the whole package. Furniture and everything. What do you
think that would net me?
The whole package? You spent ages collecting all this. You really wanna let it
go? Marshall studied Todd s face almost coincidentally as he surveyed the room. If he
kept his gaze moving, Todd wouldn t feel scrutinized and clam up. Electronics
included, furniture included, landscaping, parking, location& For the right buyer, it
might be worth four-hundred K.
Marshall started toward the back of the condo and the kitchen. He took in the
disarray, surmising Todd no longer had a maid in and hadn t felt up to cleaning.
Leaning against the counter, he sized Todd up. You won t find the right buyer in a
week, though. Maybe not in a month. From the average buyer, one who isn t interested
in the whole package, you could expect maybe two hundred. Marshall s lips quirked.
Of course, if the neighborhood s goin downhill like you say, it might be less. You
don t need to short sale, do you? My commission on that wouldn t be worth the
trouble.
Todd exhaled and peered around. Four hundred, really? How long do you think
that would take? I ll triple your commission if you take it on personally. I don t think I ll
be in this pinch forever. I just need to liquidate temporarily.
I dunno, man. Could take weeks. You need cash, it s gonna be more complicated.
Most buyers at that price point are gonna need time to get their financing together.
Marshall tilted his head to the side and gave Todd a lazy smile. But you still work at
the bank, right? You could hook em up? Might speed things along if you can pull some
strings.

At that, Todd turned a little green and looked away. Well, maybe I could find
them a loan officer. It doesn t have to be a cash sale. Would be a little unethical if I
handled it, don t you think?
Todd frowned and rubbed his nose furiously. Combined with his manic state,
Marshall recognized it as the typical gesture of a cocaine user.
Suddenly, things were becoming very clear.
You got me there, big man. Marshall smoothed his hand over his head and got a
drinking glass from the cabinet. Digging in the fridge, he found a can of diet cola and
not much else. Marshall poured that into his glass and took a sip as he considered his
next move. So you havin a rough time at work? Things ve been hard on bankers since
all that Wall Street and Madoff shit, huh?
Todd s anxious mannerisms indicated he was close to cracking, so Marshall gave
him a light punch to the shoulder and a conspiratorial grin. Y know, we real estate
agents have our own tricks.
Yeah? Tricks? What kind of tricks? See, I knew you were the right guy for the job.
I wasn t sure after all of your high-and-mighty morality shit with that little slut-in-
denial, but yeah. Tricks. Todd rubbed his hands together. Whatcha got?
Marshall shut down his emotions. His smile didn t falter. What morality shit? I
don t know your sources, but they obviously don t know me either. Y know, maybe
