I took a step forward, meaning to bully Perseus into helping if need be. If it
was a matter of touch, it would be easy enough to grab him and force him to
touch Amariah's infection.
"Ow! You're hurting me, Daddy." Amariah tried to pull out of my grip. "Stop
it!"
I loosened my hold on her hand, but I didn't let go. "My daughter wants to be
human."
Warily, Perseus took a step back and seemed to find himself pressed harder
against the masterpiece. He looked around for a way out. "Does she know any
alternative?"
"I do," I said. "Being human is the most noble thing I can imagine."
The Gorgon seemed to forget his fear for a moment. He frowned at me curiously.
"An angel thinks that it's nobler to be human than to be a creature of God?"
The wind seemed to howl outside, saying, How far you have fallen, Michael, my
love.
I looked out the window at the sun. I thought I'd heard my name. As if from
far away, I felt Amariah let go. When I looked back, Perseus had Amariah over
his shoulder and was running down the hallway.

Good morning and welcome to Know Your Messiah! We all agree that the world is
coming to an end, but just who is the savior and who is the Beast? Know Your
Messiah! helps the faithful decide for themselves. Today's guest is Rabbi
Jonah Heilman. Heilman is joining us from his apartment in San Francisco,
California.
Interviewer: Welcome to Know Your Messiah! Heilman: Thanks.
Interviewer: Rabbi Heilman is an expert on Messianic Judaism and is here to
talk with us today about what Jews are looking for in their messiah, isn't
that right?
Heilman: Yes. And I want to be up-front with you. I don't believe the messiah
has come.
Interviewer: Why is that?
Heilman: There is still plenty of wickedness in the world. The righteous
haven't received any reward.
Interviewer: Honestly, Rabbi, don't you think that's a little picky,
especially since so many of the other requirements have been fulfilled? For
our viewing audience, let's recap what those requirements are: One) the
ingathering of the exiles, Two) restoration of the religious courts, Three)
rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, Four), as the rabbi mentioned, and end
to wickedness and heresy, Five) the restoration of the line of David, and,
finally, Six) the resumption of the practice of sacrifices in the Temple.
Heilman: I think you're jumping the gun by saying that many of these things
have happened. First of all, while the Dome of the Rock has been destroyed,

possibly by an act of God, the temple has not been rebuilt. Many of my
colleagues believe that a virtual temple is good enough. I say no. We have
awaited the rebuilding of a physical temple, not some electronic space
representing it.
And, okay, there are religious courts in Jerusalem today, and there have been
since all governments adopted theocracies. This I would say was a definite
step toward the Messianic Age. I'll give you that one. And yes, many, many
Jews are attempting to make a pilgrimage to Israel, which is also a good sign.
Also, and I'll admit this is very nebulous, but there has been no Jew who has
claimed the role of messiah in America or abroad. This may not seem important,
but there is almost always someone who represents a potential moshiach in
every generation; certainly someone always claims to be. Right now, no. At a
time when you'd think anyone with half a claim would be standing up and
shouting, "Pick me."
Interviewer: What of the non-Jewish claimants?
Heilman: Well, in my beliefs it's pretty clear that the anointed one is meant
to be a Jew. He is supposed to be a great political leader who is descended
from King David, well versed in Jewish law, and observant of the commandments.
While I suppose it is possible that a non-Jew could fit those requirements, it
doesn't seem likely. Why, for instance, would a non-Jew keep kosher, as
commanded of us?
Interviewer: What if he didn't eat? What if he was, let's just say, an AI?
Heilman: There are no Jewish AIs. And the other thing that our moshiach is
supposed to be for us is a great military leader who will win battles for
Israel. I'm not sure how that could be accomplished by an electronic being.
Interviewer: Why not? Isn't war just strategy?
